Our Story from the BeeGinning
Something Pristine
We bought property in Oregon. We wanted something pristine. A beautiful nature scape to share with family, friends, and athletes.
Sweet Surprise
We purchased it from some farmers who grew too old to farm, and whose children moved away to work in the city. So, we got the land and didn’t know what sort of surprise awaited us. After having the property, we started to venture around it, and one day we decided to walk the entire perimeter of the property. One day we walked through what we thought was the edge of our property and explored the tree and timber area. Unexpectedly, we came upon a field full of flowers (lupine). We exclaimed a promised to each other, “Wow! This is a beautiful field of flowers! Let’s picnic here one day!”
The Buzzing
So the next day we fulfilled our promise. We hiked with our high protein packed picnic basket blanket in hand back to the lupine field. When we started walking to our spot, we heard this sound. At first, we thought it was mechanical. As we heard it, we started to realize it became louder as we went closer to the edge of the trees. At first, we thought that it was a water pump, buried under the bushes somewhere. As we walked further, towards the sound, we astonishingly foud buzzing and humming bees! Seeing bees swarming around us, we froze still and analyzed the situation. All things considered, we decided not to disturb them and to go find the proper gear, first. So we slowly traced our steps back through the bushes to the tree line and sat in the middle of the trees.

Uncovering 27 Hives
So, my cousin flew down from Seattle and gave us his expert opinion. He uncovered 27 hives in the field! After discovering the hives, our cousin took one, in his truck, to his honey warehouse to test it for any pesticides or problems. When he reported back, he told us it was grade A honey, free from pesticides and mites. Mites are terrible, because they kill bees. Fortunately, the queen of that hive was strong, and the bees, though they had to endure the car ride to Seattle, were happy. Next, he cleaned the hive and harvested the extra honey and wax. Most importantly, being the “Bee Friendly” beekeeper that he is, he only harvested the extra honey and left the queen and her drones some to continue their lives and hive thriving. Finally, he brought back honey for us to taste.
